Page 17 THE SAFEST ISLAND IN THE WORLD Acconci on the river Mur is the name of the provinicial capital 2003, which, for ten days, safes the essence of the genuine Graz. The Bruck an der Mur of Graz. (Bruck an der Mur is a smaller town nearby) On the island in the river Mur, a counter-world comes into being. A themes' park of provincial safety. A performative society in the name of the "bourgois spectacle". This ideal counter-world originates from the idea of a state seen as something theatrical. The Theater im Bahnhof uses the seclusion of an island to sketch a state reflecting the soul of Graz. Beyond its real power, a state always has the means of a symbolic power (in the form of pictures, performances and media) Acconci on the Mur is no exception. A principle which means a "theatrilization" in the political workaday routine; here, it finds its way back to the theatre. Questions are bound to be raised: Wherin lies a staging? How is it directed? Where does it end? The same holds true with regard to the principle of social codes, an accumulation of different ways of behaviour, dressing codes and rituals which are utopically reflected against the "foil of Graz". If we experience an inside world as a public state, which wishes do become flesh? Wherin does the Graz soul become real? Acconci on the Mur may do everything, indeed. Surely!
